Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has seen this issue:

Several users have complained that their email has been lost from just a few days ago. this has happened once to two people and twice to one person within 3 months. Now this appears to be very low scale due to the fact that only these (3) I am aware of out of a user base of hundreds, although more may have stated this same issue. I have tried to eliminate user errors, as it does not appear that either person has delegation or rules set, to delete email at any specific time. We do have a 60 day rule for the inbox, and users that have stated this issue have said it only is missing from the inbox. these users are stating that what is missing is the day before and all previous from the point of "dissapearance". Has anyone seen such anomalies?

configuration:

PC Dell GX series Win/XP Pro SP2 Outlook 2003 running in cache mode.

Server Intel based Exchange 2003 (I do not have much more info on these as these are offsite) I do not know if the "offsite" could be a part of the issue though. These are hosted out of Tempe Arizona and we are located in NE Nevada. This issue did not occur during "network outtages" this just happens at random.

If more info is needed I will get it...

Thanks so much!

Let's assume you've eliminated the following

1. The user didn't delete them (PBCK - Problem Between the Chair and the Keyboard)

2. The user doesn't have a custom view setup on their mailbox (showing only a subset of their inbox). In Outlook, select View | Arrange By | Custom and make sure no filters are in place

3. They don't have syncronization rules in place that prevent them from grabbing a full copy of the mailbox. In Outlook, select Tools | Send/Receive | Send/Receive Settings | Define Send/Receive Groups, select the All Accounts and click Edit...

4. They don't have any mailbox rules in place. (Tools Menu | Rules and Alerts)

5. Make sure they didn't accidently run Outlook Express, and somehow configure it to pull their mail via POP3. (Have not seen that one in a while - POP3 being disabled by default in 2003 helps)

Now - to troubleshoot

1. Check the Event Logs (specifically Application Log) on the Exchange Server

2. when it happens to a user, check their mailbox via Outlook Web Access. See if the messages are present via OWA

3. Assuming you have Delete Item Retention on, use a computer with the Outlook Client on it to do the following

Close Outlook
Enable the dumpsterAlwaysOn registry key, and re-open outlook. (see this video: OOPS - NO VIDEO FOR THAT! - THERE WILL BE SOON - until then - add the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options
DWORD Value: DumpsterAlwaysOn DWORD Value: 1

Re-Open Outlook
When Viewing the Inbox, select Tools | Recover Deleted Items
That will show you items that were deleted directly in the Inbox (ie: Shift-Deleted, or moved to a PST file, or other actions that did not move them to the Deleted Items folder)

4. Get Message Tracking enabled on the Exchange Server. Track messages arriving into that mailbox on the day the problem occured.

5. When the load on the server is light, run an ISInteg on the database.

Let's see if any of these explain or help shed some light on the issue.
